Sump Slurry Pump

Sump Slurry Pump

Sump slurry pumps are widely used in industrial and mining applications, primarily for conveying corrosive, non-abrasive, high-concentration slurries.
The main difference between submersible slurry pumps and above-ground slurry pumps (typically referring to horizontal slurry pumps) lies in their installation location and suction conditions.

Installation Method and Structure

Sump slurry pump

The motor is located above the tank, and the pump body extends below the liquid surface via a long shaft, with the entire unit submerged for operation.

Above-ground slurry pump

The pump and motor are mounted on a foundation base outside the liquid surface. Typically, the slurry tank must be designed with sufficient depth to ensure the slurry can flow by gravity or be fed into the pump inlet via priming.

Starting Method

01.

Sump slurry pump

The impeller is submerged in the liquid, eliminating the need for priming, and startup is very rapid.

02.

Above-ground slurry pump

Before startup, the suction piping and pump chamber must be completely filled with liquid (requiring vacuum extraction or a bottom valve); otherwise, the pump will fail to draw in the slurry.

Shaft Sealing System

01/

Sump slurry pumps: No shaft seal is required. Since the pump is submerged, there are no leakage issues, completely eliminating seal failures-the most challenging maintenance issue for slurry pumps.

02/

Above-ground slurry pumps: Must rely on a shaft seal (gland packing seal or mechanical seal), which is a vulnerable point requiring frequent maintenance and flushing.

Suction Performance

sump slurry pump02

Sump slurry pumps

The impeller is directly submerged in the liquid, there are no suction lift limitations, making them particularly suitable for pumping slurry settled at the bottom of tanks.

1

Above-ground slurry pumps

Limited by atmospheric pressure and suction lift (typically recommended not to exceed 4–5 meters), and the suction inlet is prone to clogging by settled slurry.

Applications

  • Sump slurry pump: Suitable for deep tanks, harsh operating conditions, and situations where seal water is difficult to supply (e.g., tailings dam return water, circulation tank cleaning).
  • Above-ground slurry pumps: Suitable for applications with sufficient space for piping installation.

Sump Slurry  pumps have the following features

  • The pump Casing submerged in the liquid can be metal-lined or equipped with a rubber lining, offering acid resistance and corrosion resistance;
  • The impeller is fully submerged in the liquid, eliminating the need for a mechanical seal or seal water;
  • Sump slurry pumps can also be equipped with an agitator, which aids in conveying medium with high sediment content;
  • Stable operation and long service life; the recommended submersion depth is typically between 0.9 -- 1.8 meters.
